Mexico: Round 4 of NAFTA closes chapter on competition

Round four of the renegotiation talks for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which includes representatives from the United States, Canada and Mexico, started on Wednesday, October 11, with the announcement that the three countries had reached an agreement to close the chapter on competition policy. This chapter joins that on small and medium enterprises, closed a few weeks ago in Ottawa, Canada.

    “The United States, Canada and Mexico have agreed on their obligations to provide greater procedural fairness in the application of competition law so that the parties have a reasonable opportunity to defend their interests and secure certain rights and transparency under each nation’s competition laws.” said US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

      “So far, we have made good progress, and I expect several days of hard work ahead.” Lightizer added that this round will deal with two dozen subjects, but gave no details.
