Spain: Taxi drivers call for removal of José María Marín

The Spanish Taxi Federation (Fedetaxi) has asked the Spanish Government to withdraw José María Marín Quemada from his position as President of the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) due to its opposition to the current legal situation governing taxi services in the country.

    This would mark the second time the association requests the cessation of Marín since the CNMC issued, in March 2016, a report speaking in favor of new transport platforms such as Uber. According to Fedetaxi representative Miguel Ángel Leal, the CNMC’s attitude has been to attack the public taxi service to “prepare the ground for multinationals to appropriate mobility in Spain.”

    The taxi drivers also said the CNMC has ignored a recent ruling by the Constitutional Court that annuls several points of contention in the Law of Guarantees of Market Unity, which would allow the autonomous communities to establish specific rules on these services. This, says Fedetaxi, shows “an obsessive and persecutory attitude” against the sector.
