India: Dish TV warns watchdog of Star’s monopoly of cricket

Dish TV chairman Jawahar Goel has accused Star India of attempting to create a monopoly in cricket broadcast, which he said is hurting the interests of others including distributors of TV channels like his company, as well as the consumer.

    Goel has sent a letter to Smriti Irani, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, on this matter, along with the chairmen of the Competition Commission of India and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Indian cricket board chief executive Rahul Johri and Vinod Rai.

    Goel, who is also the managing director of the leading direct to home TV company, is raising the issue just ahead of the auction of the media rights for the cricket board’s cash cow, Indian Premier League.
