Germany: Mood upbeat at BMW despite cartel allegations

BMW is one of the five German automakers recently accused of forming a cartel to fix the size of the AdBlue tank, which holds the liquid that reduces a modern diesel engine’s emissions. The allegations were serious, but a recent report finds BMW was never concerned about them.

    The company’s lawyers predicted regulators investigating the matter would quickly realize the allegations are completely false, according to Reuters. They’d only need to remove a few screws to see for themselves that various German cars use different tanks.

    “As a result, there was no doomsday mood,” an insider told Reuters.

    The five automakers involved openly admit talks were held, but they all insist the discussions centered around the AdBlue infrastructure in Europe.

    “From a BMW Group perspective, the objective of discussions with other manufacturers concerning AdBlue tanks was the installation of the required tanking infrastructure in Europe,” the company told Reuters.

    Mercedes-Benz echoed its rival’s statement, adding “an exchange of opinions on technical issues between various manufacturers in the automotive industry is useful.”
