Brazil: CADE investigates international cartel of airbags

Five companies manufacturing modules for air bags, safety belts and steering wheels for vehicles have been put on notice by the CADE General Superintendence, being investigated for possible collusive practices.

    CADE’s investigators claim to have detected signs that Autoliv, Takata, Tokai Rika, Toyoda Gosei and ZF / TRW have coordinated prices, exchanged information on sales and negotiations, in addition to efforts to divide the market. “There is evidence that some commercially sensitive information, such as prices, volumes, production capacity and others, has been shared among economic agents,” said CADE.

    The illegal actions would have been coordinated by some 29 people, connected by telephone calls, meetings and emails sent between 2005 and 2011. Despite the fact that the companies involved have their headquarters in other countries, CADE has explained that there are indications of damages to the market in Brazil.
