Spain: Brussels leans on Spain to end stowage monopoly

The European Commission has once again turned on Spain’s shipping industry, with the country’s laws governing stowage workers being in violation of EU regulations. The Commission urged Spain to reform these laws urgently. Otherwise, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg could impose a severe penalty.

    “Despite the rejection of the Royal Decree, it is essential that Spain reform its rules on dockyard workers, which do not comply with EU legislation” said the Union’s Transport Commissioner, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen.

    “We urge Spain to comply with the 2014 resolution by the Court of Justice, and to fulfil its obligations as a EU member.” The commission has offered “technical assistance” and counsel for Spanish authorities, but believes it is now up to PM Mariano Rajoy’s government to “find a way forward.”
