Russia: Gov breaks OS Monopoly

Finnish company Jolla’s Sailfish OS has been recognized as the official mobile OS by the Russian government. This OS makes use of open source Linux kernel, Jolla’s open source Mer Core UI and other 3rd party proprietary components. We can expect new Sailfish OS devices in the Russian market in 2017. Apart from Russia, Jolla is also trying to be a big part of the alternative mobile OS ecosystem in other BRICS nations.

    It may or may not be that breaking news outside of the country, but Jolla’s certification, as reported by Forbes, unchains the Russian government to be dependent “on foreign-controlled operating systems”. Over the past months, Russia has been vocal in terms of putting an end on the so-called OS monopoly: Minister Nikolai Nikiforov of the Russian Communication Ministry exposed that the country is developing their own mobile operating system called Open Mobile Platform. It is a Linux-based system with a lean for “big business and privacy seekers” who are looking for a trusted mobile OS alternative.
