Italy: Competition authority takes no action over TIM Prime

Italy’s competition authority said it has ended its investigation into Telecom Italia’s aborted TIM Prime unlimited calls and SMS service and will not take the matter further.

    It said the company has told the authority that it has definitively abandoned the plan, which would have seen millions of customers automatically charged EUR 0.49 per week for unlimited calls and SMS to a chosen TIM number.

    Telecom Italia announced the suspension of TIM Prime in April after communications regulator Agcom said it contravened the country’s consumer code and referred the operator to the competition authority.

    The decision of the competition authority, which said that while it had received more than 40 complaints about the service, its non-implementation meant consumers were unaffected, is open to appeal.

    It noted that a similar service called TIM Prime GO, launched in June, offered customers an opt-out.
