Chile: Uber to accept cash payment, renewing Taxi drivers’ anger

The fight between taxis and Uber is heating up. Starting this Monday July 25th customers using the app-based car-hire service will be able to pay in cash for their fares. The initiative will be applied randomly to 50% of customers using the app in the cities of Santiago, Concepción and Valparaiso.

    Uber’s General Manager for Chile, Carlos Schaaf, explained the move saying “we want to make transport as easily accessible as possible for everyone, everywhere. Our goal with this experiment is to show that, with a push of the button, our users can always have Uber available whether they have an active bank card or whether they prefer traditional payment methods.”

    The announcement prompted protests from a handful of taxi drivers last week. Around 30 vehicles held up traffic in protest near Santiago city center, in rejection of this new blow from Uber.
