Spain: Parcel Delivery sector to be probed again

Spanish regulators CNMC has carried out a set of simultaneous dawn raids, on April 20 and 21st, at the headquarters of various parcel delivery and courier services.

    This is the second time that the Commission carries out such in-depth probing of the industry, due to suspected anti-competitive practices. The first set of inspections was carried out on November 11th and 12th last year, also prompted by rumors of likely uncompetitive practices being carried out, particularly dividing up customers between established companies.

    Should the investigation find evidence of forbidden, anticompetitive behavior regulated by the Law for the Defense of Competition, a formal sanctions process would begin against the accused companies. Any collusion between competitors is considered a very serious violation to competition laws, which can carry fines of up to 10% of total sales volume for the offending companies in the year prior to the sanction being applied.
