South Africa: ACSA could face lengthy probe

The Competition Commission says a preliminary probe into an abuse of dominance complaint against Airports Company South Africa (Acsa), could take up to a month.

    Budget airline Skywise announced this week that it had registered the complaint with the commission.

    The carrier was grounded by Acsa early last month due to unpaid airport charges, resulting in a loss of more than R50 million in projected revenue.

    The commission’s Itumeleng Lesofe says a full investigation could take a year.

    “As part of the investigation, we will engage with Acsa and we will give them the opportunity to respond. We will also talk to other participants. Our investigation will be quite detailed and all the affected parties will get the opportunity to tell the commission their side of the story.”
