Colombia: High concentration in regional contracts raises competition worries

Speaking before an audience gathered for the XII National Infrastructure Congress, Juan Martin Caicedo, president of the Colombian Chamber of Infrastructure (CCI), revealed that 96% of all municipal transportation contracts across the country have been awarded to uncontested bidders.

    “The annual cost of corruption at a sub-national level is 500 billion pesos ($160,175,000 US). This is a serious problem that must be addressed. There are many reasons to denounce the lack of plurality, which damages the healthy growth of our industry” said the union chief.

    Pablo Felipe Robledo, President of Colombia’s Superintendence for Industry and Commerce (SIC), followed these remarks announcing an investigation being launched, covering several government contracts totalling $3.2 trillion pesos ($10 billion US approx.), involving over 540 companies across more than 300 state contracts.
