Spain: Commission slaps Mediaset with 3 million euro fine over failure to comply

Spain’s CNMC has set a new fine, of 3 million euros, on media company Mediaset, over its failure to comply with a series of compromises imposed on it after its merger of Telecinco and Cuatro TV networks.

    Owing to the perceived risk to competition implied by the joint power of the two network’s publicity market, Spanish regulators had set a series of binding compromises on the move. Mostly these were intended to prevent bundling of the networks, whether expressly or tacitly, across all of the company’s various stations and TV networks.

    CNMC has determined that Mediaset has failed to comply with at least one of these compromises, namely, the development of policies and price ranges which assume, formally or tacitly, the bundling of commercial spaces in Telecinco and Cuatro. The company has previously been fined by the commission over several other violations of these merger conditions, ammounting to 15 million euros in 2013.
