Mexico: Competition to arrive in Mexico’s gasoline market

The new economic plan presented by Mexico’s tax ministry before Congress this week includes a proposal, to push forward the liberalisation of fuel prices from 2018 to 2016, as a way to improve competition in the new sector.

    “We propose to bring forward the liberalisation of fuel prices, set for 2018 by the Energy Reform. This measure will allow Mexican families to enjoy lower costs when, as has recently occurred, international fuel prices drop”, said Miguel Messmacher, Income Secretary for the ministry.

    According to the document handed to the Mexican Sentate, the measure will help offset any negative impact from the Special Tax on Products and Services which are to be applied to Diesel and gasoline fuels. The plan also calls for setting minimum and maximum prices, aiming to help families’ income.
