Brazil: Uber hurts employment – Rousseff

Brazillian president Dilma Rousseff offered harsh criticism of taxi-finding app Uber, saying that this online service has helped feed rising unemployment. However, she has said that each city will have to decide how it chooses to regulate the taxi service.

    Brazil’s leader elaborated, saying “Uber is a complicated matter, because it takes jobs from people (…) It leaves less work for taxi drivers. It’s not an easy subject. It depends on the rules for each city and State, as it’s not a decision for the Federal Government.”

    Brazil’s three major cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia have already announced plans to ban the service from operating, although none of these prohibitions has yet been enforced. In the case of Brasilia, local legislators voted to ban this as yet unregulated service, a decision then vetoed by the Federal District’s governor. Instead, a special commission has been formed to decide on the matter.
