Chile: Health Clinic group rejects price controls

Spokesmen for Chile’s Association of Preventive Healthcare Institutions (ISAPRES) met with health Minister, Carmen Castillo and other officials. During the meeting, the organisation expressed their rejection of a proposed price-control mechanism, where the State would have a say in setting the prices of various health plans included in the new healthcare system, to be presented before the National Congress this september. Among the main points of contention are the creation of a social security system, a universal commonwealth fund and the aforementioned price-control mechanism.

    Rafael Caviedes, the ISAPRES association president, rejected the latter, saying that “In the future model, where there will be full mobility, we don’t think a price-control would be convenient. If there is mobility between providers there is no need for the State to set prices”.

    Concluding their statmeent, ISAPRES’ representatives stated that the main priority is to “get to a system that doesn’t exclude people, and one that is viable”.
