Argentina: Group denounces monopolistic practices in print media

Argentina’s Association of Independent Cultural Magazines (AReCIA) has presented a series of complaints, which will be part of a Special Taskforce consultation taken by the International Human Rights Commission, researching freedom of speech in Argentina’s media sector.

    AReCIA’s complaint describe a highly concentrated and vertically integrated sector, which harms small players. Journalist Claudia Acuña, speaking for the organisation, highlighted the need for legislation to regulate these activities, as “There are now laws on this in Argentina. We must pressure the Argentine government to put a stop to this concentration”, she said. AEeCIA has already presented a proposal for legislative reforms to the media sector, signed by 14 legislators and supported by various political groups.

    The report will be part of the commission’s 2015 Annual Report, which will focus on freedom of speech. “We are interested in having some sort of warning or recommendation (for the Argentine government) coming from the International Human RIghts Commission”, said Acuña.
