Chile: Steelmakers turn to government for support against unfair competition

With Chile’s steel industry going through a crisis, local steelmaker CAP has turned to the government, demanding it take steps to correct market distortions and stop what they claim is unfair competition from Chinese importers.

    Ernesto Escobar, general manager at CAP, highlighted that their main priority is to ensure worker security at their Huachipato plant.

    Among the problems faced by the steelmaker are sharp rises of up to 40% in energy prices charged by power company Endesa. Escobar said the company is looking into autonomous energy production, although for the next year they will continue to pay higher prices than their competitors.
