Canada: Big ISPs must share high speed fibre networks with competitors

“Following an extensive review, the CRTC found that the large incumbent companies continue to possess market power in the provision of wholesale high-speed access services and is requiring that they make these services available to competitors”, the CRTC said in an announcement yesterday.

    But they have limited smaller ISPs to access of their slower networks, through cable or copper wire connections.

    Canada’s telecom regulator has ruled that the country’s large Internet providers must open up access to their latest-generation fiber-based services to independent players. The regulator said the measures are to foster competition and provide Canadians with more choice and innovative services at reasonable prices.
