Panama: Warning over electricity monopoly

Panama’s Chamber for Commerce, Industry and Agriculture has formally requested the Energy Ministry for a 90 day extension in their contract bid for building a 350MW network. The request stems from four recent modifications to the contract terms, which ‘completely modify’ the business logic of the scheme.

    “We see this situation as contrary to the idea of having more competition, as it limits it instead, possibly for the benefit of certain actors over others” said the NGO’s president, Carlos Fernández.

    The Chamber of Commerce considers the additional time ‘indispensable’ in order to ‘guarantee greater and freer access’ to electricity generation contracts, as well as to evaluate the current definition of Market Share, so as to incorporate it into the final law.
