The German competition regulator has announced fines for seven food retailers and four suppliers, after finding them guilty of price fixing. The Federal Cartel Office has levied combined fines of just over €151m against Metro, Rewe, and Aldi, amongst others.
The regulator said it found that while suppliers agreed to fix prices, the retailers also demanded that the manufacturers ensure similar prices at rival chains. No individual break-up of the fines was disclosed.
The investigation, which looked at the fixing of prices of pet food and body care products, has now been completed. However, the regulator continues to investigate similar allegations in the confectionery, coffee, and beer categories.
The move is the latest in a series of fines levied by country regulators across Europe, related to price-fixing in the retail industry.
