Brazil: Telefónica Brazil, uninterested in further mergers

Alberto Hocajo, acting president of Telefonica Brazil, declared last week that Vivo (Telefonica’s Brazilian branch) is perhaps ‘the least interested of the telecomm operators in new market concentrations”, dismissing talk of possible new acquisitions following the recent purchase of local rival GVT.

    Horcajo pointed out the company’s strong position as the largest mobile phone operator in the country, which does not call for “buying the customer base” of their less-qualified rivals. He did, however, mention that there may be future changes within the industry.

    Over the last year rumors have circulated regarding a possible agreement between Telefónica, América Móvil and Brazilian Oi, through which the three would buy out their rival, TIM Brasil, the second largest player in the current market, and split the company among themselves.
