UK: Watchdog accused of “patronizing”‘ with money-saving tips

On Tuesday Ofgem released a statement apologizing for “patronizing” comments made in a press release in early January. Families struggling with heating costs this winter in the UK were told by the energy watchdog to go without frothy coffees and other personalexpenses to help pay the bills. Ofgem is accused of ‘patronizing’ after telling people facing high gas and electricity charges to cut personal costs to save money.

    An Ofgem spokesman said: ‘The last thing we intended to do back on 7 January 2015 was to give offence through a press release which was trying to get across the point that savings of up to $300 are available to energy customers.’

    The watchdog said it had also referred energy firms to the Competition and Markets Authority for a full investigation on why energy costs have not gone down.
