South Africa: Competition Commission clears Anglo American mining buy

South Africa’s Competition Commission announced Thursday that it has approved Anglo American’s plans to acquire chrome-ore mining conglomerate Samancor.

    According to reports, Anglo American will acquire the rest of Samancor, a joint venture with BHP Billiton. Anglo American already has a 50 percent stake in the mining company, but BHP had control of the assets.

    The Commission found no horizontal overlap in Anglo American’s and Samancor’s operations and has approved of the takeover without concessions. Following the deal, Anglo American will control the joint venture.
