The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, after a two-year investigation into the healthcare industry, seems to be backtracking on previous demands for hospital divestitures.
Reports say the CMA previously ordered HCA International to divest one or two of its hospitals in April. HCA appealed the ruling with the Competition Appeal Tribunal, a case that was slated to begin in January.
Now, reports say the CMA has sent a letter to the Federation of Independent Practitioner Organizations saying it would retract its demands for hospital sales.
While both FIPO and the CMA declined to comment, the competition watchdog did note that “in light of certain matters identified during the litigation and in order to ensure fairness to the parties, we have invited the CAT to remit these matters to the CMA” so the CMA can reconsider its decision.
