South Africa: Tribunal urged to clear telco merger

South Africa’s Competition Commission announced Wednesday that it is encouraging the nation’s Competition Tribunal to clear MTN’s planned takeover of Afrihost Proprietary Limited.

    According to reports, integrated telecommunications firm MTN is looking to purchase a 51 percent stake in Internet service provider Afrihost.

    In its review of the deal, the Commission found that a combination of the companies would not harm competition as they are not direct competitors.

    The review was passed on to the Tribunal following objections from telco rivals against the transaction.
