France/US: Dairy merger plans under wraps since March

France-based dairy firm Danone and US infant formula conglomerate Mead Johnson Nutrition Company have reportedly been in merger discussions since March, unnamed sources say.

    The two companies declined to comment on the matter, but reports say China is particularly concerned over a potential deal. According to reports, if the acquisition moves forward, China’s infant formula and dairy industries will be dominated by just three conglomerates.

    Reports say Danone is looking to move outside the EU and has eyed several potential acquisitions in China and Africa. A deal with Mead Johnson could reach up to $4.3 billion, say reports.
