South Africa: Cell C offers opposition to rivals’ network sharing plans

In response to requests for comment by South Africa’s Competition Commission regarding the deal, reports say wireless operator Cell C has told authorities that it does not agree with proposed plans between rivals MTN and Telkom to launch a network sharing deal.

    ”As Cell C understands the proposed transaction we do not agree with it,” the company said earlier this week.

    Top landline operator Telkom announced in March it is looking to partner with MTN to share wireless networks. The joint venture would lower wireless operating costs for Telkom while giving MTN access to Telkom’s spectrum.

    MTN is currently the nation’s leading wireless operator.

    The Commission is currently reviewing the deal; reports did not indicate whether Cell C’s opposition to the plans would lead the Commission to block the network sharing deal.
