China: Food packaging dominance abuse probe drags on

An antitrust investigation by China’s State Administration for Industry and Commerce into the international food packaging industry has dragged on now for more than one year, say reports, but isn’t close to a conclusion.

    The SAIC first announced in July of last year that it received reports of an anticompetitive cartel lead by industry leader Tetra Pak that it was abusing its market dominance to charge discriminatory prices. The case centers around packaging for dairy products, say reports.

    While the probe continues, China has since fined six dairy firms $110 million for anticompetitive conduct. Reports say the ongoing investigation into Tetra, however, is not likely to end soon, though reports did not say whether the SAIC has given an update on the case.
