US: Wireless group calls for weakened FCC power

The Wireless Association, known as CTIA, has reportedly sent a letter to Congress asking for the Federal Communications Commission’s role in competition matters to be reduced as lawmakers plan to revamp the Communications Act of 1934.

    According to reports, CTIA called for the House Committee on Energy and Commerce to promote the “light touch” of the FCC’s hand in communications regulation and to limit the FCC’s regulatory powers to certain areas where necessary.

    While the CTIA recognized the FCC’s role in releasing spectrum and boosting competition in some areas, the group told Congress that as a whole the industry is self-regulating.

    ”As the wireless industry continues to thrive based on the FCC’s current light regulatory touch, Congress should ensure that any updates to its competition policies maintain and extend that approach,” the group said in its filing.
