Ireland: New competition watchdog gets Cabinet vote

Legislation that would create Ireland’s new Competition and Consumer Protection Commission will go before the Cabinet on Tuesday as reports say lawmakers are looking to boost the competition regime.

    The new watchdog would combine the current Consumer Agency and the Competition Authority. Reports say authorities are looking to establish a regulator with increased strength over anticompetitive behavior. The new watchdog will hold powers that allow it to crack down on price-fixing, among others behaviors.

    Jobs Minister Richard Bruton will introduce the legislation to the Cabinet, which is expected to sign off on the bill.
