South Korea: Another suspension expected to plague anticompetitive telcos

South Korean officials are slated to slap another business suspension on the nation’s top wireless carriers, reports say, just days after a similar suspension was handed down on the firms for anticompetitive conduct.

    Reports say the Korea Communications Commission is cracking down on the telcos’ use of subsidies to lure customers away from rivals. The practices, allegedly carried out by top carrier SK Telecom as well as rivals KT and LG Uplus, are said to harm competition.

    The KCC is set to announce the business suspensions later this week, sources said, and the authority is poised to impose the suspensions in May, after the existing 45-day suspension expires.

    The first suspension was issued on the companies by the Ministry of Science, ITC and Future Planning.
