Following a vote on Wednesday, reports say the European Parliament voted by a large majority to veto various proposals offered by the European Commission to overhaul the railway industry to boost competition.
MEPs debated six proposals that are part of the Fourth Railway Package and ultimately scaled-down regulations of financial transparency, as well as the independence of infrastructure management, within vertically-integrated groups in the industry, say reports.
The Commission, which first proposed the rules in January of last year, expressed disappointment at Parliament’s decision, claiming the amendments to its proposals will reduce competition.
The Community of European Railway & Infrastructure Companies, however, welcomed the MEPs’ decision.
