North America: US, Canada, Mexico join competition forces

Competition officials from Canada, Mexico and the US converged in Washington last week in efforts to share information regarding competition policy and enforcement, say reports.

    The US Department of Justice’s Bill Baer, the Federal Trade Commission’s Edith Ramirex, Canada’s Commissioner of Competition John Pecman, and Mexico’s Federal Competition Commission head Alejandra Palacios Prieto met last Thursday to strengthen ties with each other and learn from antitrust experience.

    The meeting solidifies the North American nations’ ties following a 1995 antitrust cooperation agreement between the US and Canada, a 1999 agreement between the US and Mexico, and yet another agreement between Canada and Mexico in 2001.

    Reports say the officials met to recognize the importance of cooperation as the nations’ markets become increasingly interconnected.
