Hutchinson Whampoa is fueling positive outlook within Sweden’s telecommunications sector as the Hong Kong company is said to be planning a bid to acquire Tele2’s Swedish operations, say reports.
Such a merger would launch consolidation in a highly fragmented market; the acquisition rumors hiked Tele2 shares last Friday.
Hutchinson currently owns 3 Sweden, currently the nation’s fourth-place operator; Tele2 stands at second place. Tele2 declined to comment on the matter but is public about its plans for involvement in any market consolidation.
The reports coincided with rumors that Hutchinson may also look to acquire TeliaSonera’s operations in Denmark.
