EU: Almunia hints at Samsung’s struggles to settle patent case

While he declined to elaborate, European Commissioner Joaquin Almunia offered some insight into global smartphone king Samsung’s efforts to settle an investigation by the regulator into its lawsuits launched against Apple Inc. for patent infringement.

    At a patent conference, Almunia reportedly said regulators would weigh feedback on Samsung’s settlement offer, noting the discussion of “possible improvements…in the coming weeks” to the company’s proposal.

    Samsung said last September that it has agreed to refrain from launching patent litigation against rivals for the next five years and to allow a third-party arbitrator to settle any disagreements on licensing fees.

    The Commission opened an investigation into Samsung since the firm has lodged cases against Apple – and since Apple has launched their own legal attacks against Samsung – in nearly a dozen nations.
