New Zealand: Young telco takes on dominant players’ spectrum grab

    The newcomer sent a letter to the nation’s Commerce Commission urging the regulator to block the buyout of remaining spectrum by top players Vodafone New Zealand and Telecom Corp. Reports say Two Degrees claims the sale of the spectrum will substantially harm competition.

    The spectrum first became available when the government discontinued its use for analogue television, allowing it to be used for 4G mobile networks.

    Two Degrees argues that if the spectrum is sold to the market’s top competitors, the new wireless firm will face higher capital costs and will no longer to be able to adequately compete in the market.

    The Commission is set to rule on the spectrum sale on December 6.
