US: Klobuchar teams with FCC on cell phone unlocking regulation

Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) expressed support for the US Federal Communications Commission late last week on its work to promote cell phone unlocking, offering a press release to praise the regulator.

    According to the release, the FCC has called on wireless carriers to collaborate on standards to allow consumers to unlock phones, which would allow those customers to switch between operators while keeping the same device.

    In a letter sent by the FCC to the carriers, the authority warned that if the companies fail to allow unlocked phones, the FCC would step in.

    The FCC’s actions follow Klobuchar’s introduction of the Wireless Consumer Choice Act earlier this year, which called upon the FCC to take such measures. The efforts are aimed at hiking competition between the operators.
