US: Millions at stake for Samsung as jury set to decide patent damages for Apple
Following last August’s finding that Samsung had infringed on six patents owned by Apple in the manufacturing of more than a dozen Samsung mobile phones and tablets, a new jury is set to decide the damages the South Korea-based tech firm owes Apple.
Jury selection began Tuesday in California for the case, the latest in a saga of the patent wars between Apple and Samsung, during which each company has earned wins against each other. Experts expect the legal battles to continue for months to come.
The companies’ lawyers and US District Judge Lucy Koh have begun choosing a jury to clarify what a previous jury got wrong, according to Judge Koh.
The previous jury agreed that Samsung was to pay Apple $1.05 billion in damages for patent infringements involving 26 Samsung products. The judge said that the damages were miscalculated for 14 of those products, however.
Since, Judge Koh has reduced damages to $400 million and will now require a new jury to recalculate damages for 13 products.
Experts hired by both sides have reportedly estimated a new calculation for damages ranging from zero dollars to more than the original $400 million.
While millions of dollars are at stake, reports say an even larger lawsuit is slated to begin in March of next year that will involve newer smartphone products and patent infringement between the two companies.
