The head of India’s telecommunications regulator said Monday that the government’s plans for consolidation policy in the market should be announced in the coming days.
Telecom minister Kapil Sibal is expected to announce the upcoming policy changes following the Telecom Commission’s approval earlier this month of new guidelines that allow telco operators to acquire each other so long as that merger does not result in a more-than 50 percent market control, say reports.
The upcoming merger and acquisition policy is expected to reflect the expected consolidation of a largely fragmented market, where about 13 service providers reign.
Reports say an upcoming merger with Vodafone India, which controls about 17.8 percent of the market, may already be in the works.
