Telecommunications company Telstra has introduced new competition in Australia’s Internet provider industry, a move the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will be monitoring, though not blocking.
Reports say Telstra has launched low-cost provider Belong in a service that allows consumers to keep existing phone lines and existing services currently provided by Telstra.
The company’s launch comes just months after Telstra’s attempt to acquire Adam Internet fell-through; the deal, put forth for $60 million, raised concerns within the ACCC.
Now, according to the regulator, because Belong is part of Telstra, the ACCC said it “in principle” has no problems with the new company, though vowed to keep an eye on its operations and effects on the market.
