Even before retail chain Safeway announced plans to sell off its remaining 72 Dominick’s supermarket locations in Chicago, reports say grocery rivals were already considering buyouts of the sites.
Safeway announced earlier this month that after 15 years of business in Chicago, it would leave the market. Competitors including Kroger Inc. and Roundy’s Inc. are reportedly interested in acquiring the Dominick’s stores.
Sources say Jewel-Osco acquired four Dominick’s locations last week and may be in the market for another 10.
Potential buyers, however, were unavailable for comment.
According to reports, while a quick sale may lessen the blow to local stores, no deals have been guaranteed to see all Dominick’s stores snatched-up.
