Bahamas: Money woes, failing equipment urge major energy overhaul

The Bahamas’ government is reportedly mulling major energy reforms that would include splitting the state-owned Bahamas Electricity Corporation into two separate firms.

    The reforms, aimed at cutting losses of the ailing utility, would occur by the end of the year.

    The government is now reviewing private bids that, according to reports, were probably sent last week from generation companies. One will be selected to operate the BEC plant.

    The government is also looing for help in operating the BEC’s transmission and distribution services, which, if split-off, would become its own monopoly.
