US: JetBlue takes soapbox in AA, US Airways debate

JetBlue Airways has joined the debate regarding the proposed merger between American Airlines and US Airways, a deal that sparked legal action by the US Department of Justice, and is calling on American to make major divestures should the merger proceed.

    JetBlue CEO Dave Barger said American should sell all flights at Washington Reagan National Airport if it acquires US Airways, the latter of which is currently the top airline at the airport. Reports say US Airways operates about 55 percent of Washington Reagan’s flights.

    The rival airline said, however, that it is not opposed to the merger.

    JetBlue’s comments came before a US bankruptcy judge cleared AMR Corp’s plan to emerge from bankruptcy, of which the US Airways merger is a part. The plan hinders on the merger’s completion.
