EU: Belgian state aid to airports probed

The European Commission announced it is launching an investigation into state aid given to several of Belgium’s airports, though the regulator stated that no formal probe has initiated. A spokesperson confirmed the news in an emailed statement that the Commission is requesting information from Belgian authorities; the request was sent July 31. The EC’s look into state aid is only the next such instance as the regulator focuses on government subsidies for airports throughout Europe. According to reports, the watchdog’s agenda for next year includes policies to make it harder for states to bail out struggling airports.
