Czech Republic: In name of competition, regs open doors for fourth telco operator

The telecommunications watchdog of the Czech Republic said it will open its upcoming wireless auction to a fourth operator in efforts to increase competition, despite protests from current competitors. As part of efforts by several EU member states to upgrade wireless networks based on LTE or 4G technology, the CTU announced a fourth operator will be able to bid in the auction, which the regulator plans to initiated on August 15. Earlier auction plans were abandoned last March but one month later the CTU decided to allocate more spectrum for a new entrant into the market currently dominated by Telefonica Czech Republic, T-Mobile and Vodafone. The three giants disapprove of a fourth competitor, however, as they claim the fourth company will not have to pay as much for its license.
