US/China: Whirlpool announces new push into Chinese markets

US appliance giant Whirlpool announced early Tuesday an agreement to acquire 51 percent of Hefei Rongshida Sanyo Electric Company, based in China, for $552 million. Reports say the buyout is intended to push Whirlpool further into the Chinese appliance market. The deal remains subject to regulatory approval, though Whirlpool said it expects the deal to close by 2014’s end.
