EU: Commission takes second look at Italian telco decision

The European Commission said this week it will review the recent ruling by Italy’s telecommunications watchdog that requires Telecom Italia to lower fees charged to rivals to use its network, and has reportedly asked the telco regulator to suspend the ruling. The Commission issued a statement Monday requesting the suspension of the Italian ruling for three months while it reviews the decision; The EC’s commissioner for the digital agenda Neelie Kroes said the telecommunications watchdog did not follow proper procedure when issuing the ruling. Telecom Italia is sure to welcome the Commission’s second look at the forced fee cuts as the company claims the ruling will lead to more than $145 million in revenue losses every year. The Commission’s announcement came on the heels of another notice that the EU watchdog has suspended a ruling by Portuguese telecommunications watchdog ANACOM regarding so-called fixed termination rates.
