News continues to roll in following the latest gathering in court of US officials and tech giant Apple Inc last Friday, the most recent being a stern scolding of Apple by US District Judge Denise Cote. Judge Cote found Apple guilty last month of fixing eBooks prices in a lawsuit initiated by the US Department of Justice; the judge denied last Friday Apple’s request to temporarily suspend the verdict and, in a statement, described Apple as “unrepentant.” The publishers also accused by the DOJ of conspiring to fix eBooks prices with Apple – all of which settled with officials – recently backed Apple in the case and rallied against the DOJ’s suggestion that Apple should cut all ties with the publishers. But, according to Judge Cote, “none of the publishers nor Apple have expressed any remorse” over the collusion. The DOJ’s proposed sanctions are now being reviewed by the judge and said future meetings would be set up among attorneys general, Apple and the DOJ to decide on a potential settlement.
