Australia: ACCC remembers Bannerman, first chairman

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it is paying tribute to Ron Bannerman, the first Chairman of the Trade Practices Commission, who passed away last Saturday. He was 92. The regulator was the immediate predecessor of the ACCC. Bannerman was the first and only Commissioner of Trade Practices; upon the ACCC’s establishment in 1974 he took up the position of Chairman of the Commission until his retirement 10 years later. Among his many contributions to Australia’s competition policy includes his annual reports used to strengthen competition law in the nation, eventually leading to the Trade Practices Act in 1974.
